Bird watching and environmental tours
Siem Reap offers unique bird watching opportunities. The Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary in Tonle Sap Lake and the An Trapeng Tmor Reservoir in northeast Siem Reap are both home to many rare and endangered species. For the Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary, see the Tonle Sap page.
(The following about Ang Trapeng Tmor is courtesy of the Sam Beasna Centre.) It started as a reservoir on Angkor Highway 66 and was rebuilt in 1976 as an artificial irrigation and water storage reservoir by slave labor during the Khmer Rouge regime. The reservoir now has unique wetlands associated with grasslands, birch forests and rice fields. In addition to being preyed upon by more than 300 sarus cranes during the dry (non-breeding) season, more than 200 other bird species occur here, 18 of which have been classified as globally or near-globally endangered. This is also one of the few sites in Cambodia where you can see the endangered Eld's Deer. Fruit bat colonies live in taller trees half-submerged at the edge of a reservoir.
The best time to see the sarus crane is between February and May, but a variety of birds can be seen throughout the year. There are also Angkor temples on hilltops a few kilometers into the forest, and traditional silk weaving is still practiced in adjacent villages. Depending on the season, boat trips are available on the 11km wide and 8-wide reservoir, offering fantastic views of the surrounding countryside.
Officially declared a Sarus Crane Sanctuary by royal decree in 2000, the area covers an area of over 12,000 hectares. After Sam Beasna and his friends worked for the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), all foreign visitors must register with the WCS Office. adjacent villages.

Yatep lives in Siem Reap and is said to protect believers and help them win the lottery. Chicken skin offerings are common around shrines.
Wat Bo was founded in the 18th century. A tall and respected tower. Like Phnom Penh's Silver Pagoda, Wat Bo's Behere has a very unique mural by Liam Kerr, said to be from the late 19th century. Also of interest is the large collection of Buddha statues located behind the main Buddha statue.
Wat Keseram "Tower of Cornflower Petals". The idyllic setting and the extensive and detailed collection of Buddha's life inside Vihear make it one of the more interesting places to visit. The year of establishment is unclear, but most agree that Behair was built in the early 1970s.

Preah Ang Chek & Preah Ang Chom Temples Of particular importance to the locals is the small shrine in front of the Grand Hotel d'Angkor, which houses two statues of Buddha named Preah Ang Chek (Taller) and Preah Ang Chom (Small). They are surrounded by stories of strength and immortality. Visitors can make offerings and take pictures. The respect of local pilgrims is felt.
